SENATE WEBCAST - Sunday, July 26, 2020
Months of bipartisan negotiations lead to police accountability reforms passing the legislature and being signed into law by Governor Tim Walz. However, as the bill was making its way through the process, legislative leaders were citing it as only a first step in addressing policing in Minnesota. Senator Patricia Torres Ray, DFL-Minneapolis, and a member of the People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus, talks with Capitol Report moderator Shannon Loehrke about the next steps in police reform.
Governor Tim Walz is expected to decide soon on the reopening of Minnesota Schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the Senate passed a resolution that urges the governor to allow school boards to determine their own approaches to reopening. Shannon talks with Senate Education Chair Carla Nelson about her effort to keep school reopening decisions local.
